Lech Walesa’s baby granddaughter has heart surgery

WARSAW, Poland — The family of Poland’s former president, Lech Walesa, says that his baby granddaughter has successfully undergone open heart surgery.

Walesa’s son, Jaroslaw Walesa, told the Thursday issue of the Super express tabloid that his 8-month-old daughter Lea went through the two-hour surgery at the children’s hospital in Warsaw.

Lea was born with atrial septal defect, a hole in the wall that separates the top two chambers of the heart.

Jaroslaw Walesa said he was “very happy that our daughter will be able to live normally.”

The 42-year-old Jaroslaw, who is a member of the European Union’s parliament, said he was “grateful to God and the doctors that all went well.”

Lech Walesa led the pro-democracy Solidarity movement in the 1980s and was Poland’s president in 1990-95.
