Environment Canada issues freezing rain warning for Ottawa

By Mike Vlasveld

It may be spring, but it might not look like it this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a freezing rain warning, Friday, as it expects a weather system to hit the capital region Saturday.

The agency expects a few centimetres of snow to develop early Saturday morning. Snow is then expected to mix with or change to freezing rain later in the morning. Freezing rain may continue through much of the day before changing to rain late Saturday afternoon.

There is also a risk of freezing rain overnight Saturday into Sunday, as colder air returns.

Environment Canada said the precipitation is the result of a low pressure system it expects to track over Southern Ontario on Saturday.

It added, “There remains considerable uncertainty in the exact track of this system and the associated precipitation.”

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break and possible power outages.

The weather for the first week of April is looking a little better, with double digit temperatures expected late in the week.
