Chaudière Crossing to remain closed until August

By Mike Vlasveld

Public Services and Procurement Canada says the Union Bridge at the Chaudière Crossing will remain closed to until the completion of planned construction.

The bridge was closed on April 27 because of rising Ottawa River levels and it was recently announced that the bridge would remain closed until further notice, due to the high water. PSPC said Tuesday, with construction in support of a development along the Booth/Eddy corridor slated to start in June, the bridge would simply remain closed to vehicular traffic until that wraps up in August.

The government agency said the crossing will remain closed to all modes of transportation until the water levels recede, the inspections can be completed, and the bridge is deemed safe for use.

Once the Union Bridge is deemed to be safe, it will reopen for public transit, pedestrians and cyclists only. Vehicular traffic will be allowed to cross there once the development is complete.

In the meantime, private vehicles will continue to be rerouted to the Portage Bridge and commercial traffic will have to travel to the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge.

PSPC said it continues to work with its partners to ensure the impacts of the Union Bridge closure and construction work on traffic will be minimized.
