Chapman Mills Conservation Area to get new dock

By OttawaMatters Staff

This summer, the conservation area’s old dock will be replaced with a more accessible one. The renovation is meant to not only meet accessibility standards but also, protect the shoreline.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) owns and manages the conservation area off Winding Way and Prince of Wales drives in Barrhaven. Megan Dunster, their conservation lands technician, says the property’s current dock needs to be replaced due to anglers and paddlers finding more convenient ways into the water. Because of this, the shoreline is now damaged and fragile.

“I firmly believe the more that people can experience the outdoors, the more they will care about maintaining a healthy environment for themselves and for future generations,” she says, adding, “This connection is essential to the RVCA’s goals for a healthy, sustainable watershed. The dock project will include interpretive signs about fishing in the Rideau River.”

Dunster also feels there’s a shortage of public fishing spots in the city of Ottawa, particularly along the Rideau River and that the new dock will allow some south Ottawa residents to take part in the sport for first time.
