City of Gatineau to impose trash fees in September

By OttawaMatters Staff

As of September 15, 2019, household waste in Gatineau, Que. will be limited to 120 litres per unit. Residents generating more garbage will have to buy bags for $0.50 each, with a maximum of five 80-litre bags allowed per collection.

Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, the municipal councillor and chair of the Commission of Territory Development, Housing and Environment, says the initiative is one of many by the City of Gatineau aimed at fighting climate change. According to the councillor, more should be done to save the environment and imposing gray bins and fees will help the city do that.

“We are aware that behaviours can be difficult to change. But climate change demands that everyone do their share to protect the environment,” says Marquis-Bissonnette before adding that, “Garbage in landfills generates large amounts of greenhouse gas. Thus, it is essential that we reduce our garbage in order to reduce our ecological footprint.”

Gray bin bags will be sold in packages of five at service centres, ecocentres and online. They will be available by late summer, with the exact date to be announced shortly.
