A young bear was hit by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon and was not able to be rehabilitated or helped, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said.
According to officials, the hit-and-run happened on Highway 7 around noon on June 10 by the Hazeldean Road exit in Stittsville. Police responded to reports that there was an injured bear in the centre median area. The driver did not remain at the scene.
“It had visible, serious injuries to its hind legs,” OPP said in a post on X. “All efforts were made to see if it was possible to save the bear, which was a youngling.”
Officers said they contacted Bylaw, Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ministry of Natural Resources to see if the bear could be captured and rehabilitated. Unfortunately, experts said there were no local facilities.
“The bear’s condition worsened, causing it to suffer,” police said.
Which led to the “tough” decision to “put the bear out of its misery.”
Police said this situation is always unfortunate. They are reminding people that if they are in a collision with an animal, they should report it to see if the animal can be saved.
