Local golf course ready for provincial reopen ahead of announcement

The general manager of a local golf course and country club believes it is the right time for Ontario's golf courses to reopen.

Adam Findlay, general manager and golf professional at Riverbend Golf & Country Club, believes the sport is ideal during the pandemic as the nature of the sport encourages physical distance.

Findlay, whose course is on Franktown Road in Richmond, Ont., located about a half hour south west of downtown Ottawa, believes there is more risk associated in every day tasks than there is associated with golfing.

“I don't think we're putting anyone any more at risk than everything else they're allowed to do in society,” Findlay explained. “I think you'll run into more people going to buy a bag of chips at the corner store than you will at the golf course.”

Findlay says he does believe this season will see an influx in customers, as it is one of the first activities returning amid the pandemic.

Currently, Findlay and the staff at Riverbend Golf & Country Club is preparing to implement safety protocols that include heavy sanitizing, limiting the number of people inside buildings and golf carts and taking steps to limit the touching of golf flags.

Premier Doug Ford is expected to make his announcement on golf courses reopening Thursday.
