Calypso Waterpark hoping province moves to Stage 3 reopening by early July

Calypso Waterpark is preparing to open, as it's hopeful the province will soon be moving into Stage 3 of its COVID-19 economic reopening plan.

Theme park president Sylvain Lauzon says his team has crafted a comprehensive plan to open that involves using their vast space to spread out waiting lines.

“At Calypso, it's over 100 acres,” explains Lauzon. “So we basically created a plan that allows us to have distancing between the people, and still… of course, it would be reduced capacity [in the park] — drastically reduced capacity… but we are confident that with this distancing, with the plan we've proposed, that it is very safe.”

Plus, the president tells 1310 NEWS' The Rob Snow Show on Thursday, that COVID-19 apparently doesn't do well in water parks.

“We have scientific proof that, with the water… the level of chlorine we're asked to have in our water at all times… well, not only is there no spreading effect, but it kills the virus.”

Stage 2 of Ontario's reopening plan, which comes into effect Friday, June 12, does not include water parks. They are set to be included the next phase of the provincial plan.

Lauzon is hoping to open in early July and get at least 60 days with a reduced capacity at the park, which would allow Calypso to break even financially.
