By Alex Goudge

One man is dead and a woman remains in critical condition following a collision near the Champlain Bridge on Wednesday night.

According to the RCMP, a vehicle travelling westbound on the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway struck a male cyclist and a female pedestrian around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The incident occurred after the vehicle left the roadway near the Champlain Bridge intersection, for a reason that has yet to be determined by police.

The driver of the vehicle was also taken to hospital but did not sustain any major injuries and has been discharged.

Ottawa Police initially took the call but the case was handed over to the RCMP as the bridge is under federal jurisdiction.

The public is urged to avoid the area of Island Park Drive and Sir John A. McDonald Parkway due to the ongoing investigation.

The intersection and the Champlain Bridge remain closed as investigators analyze the scene.
