COVID-19 forces closure of Vanier Community Laundry Co-op

A community laundry facility is the latest victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For more than 20 years, the Community Laundry Co-op has provided a cheap way for low-income residents to clean their clothes.
“Despite our efforts to revitalize the organization and the real potential for our social enterprise to generate significant income for the co-op, the lack of ongoing operational funding and the interruption created by COVID-19 has left us unable to continue operations,” reads a statement posted on the co-op's website.
“Even though we are feeling sad, we must celebrate the co-op and what it has achieved over the last 20 years – the good times we had together, the friendships we developed, the thousands of loads of wash we did and the things we achieved both as an organization and as individual members.”
The laundry co-op, which was located at 404 McArthur Avenue, closed its doors for good on Wednesday, November 11.
The space has been handed over to Heartwood House, a facility that houses 20 non-profit and charitable organizations.
