Two more residents at Miramichi Lodge in Pembroke have tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the Renfrew County District Health Unit (RCDHU), the new cases were confirmed as a result of testing in response to the first positive case at the long-term care home, reported on Monday, February 22, 2021.
While there are currently three people infected with the virus, the RCDHU says only one is exhibiting symptoms, and all three are stable in the home's isolation unit. In addition, all residents in 'Home Areas 2B and 3A' are being isolated in their rooms as a precaution.
Health officials say 96 per cent of the Miramichi Lodge residents received their first doses of the Moderna vaccine on Monday, February 8, and are scheduled to receive their second dose on schedule. While a single dose of vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce serious illness, RCDHU Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Cushman says labs have been reporting low-level positive tests in asymptomatic residents who have received the vaccine.
There are currently no positive cases among staff at the home, who were vaccinated on Thursday, February 25, and essential caregivers are scheduled to receive their vaccines this Saturday and Sunday.
At this time, only staff are allowed to enter the home, and contacts for residents will be contacted directly if there are any concerns. The home is also increasing electronic communication to families to three times week.
