The Smiths Falls Police Service (SFPS) is adding some new tech to one of its vehicles, which is expected to enhance public safety and crime prevention efforts.
The Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) consists of a set of cameras mounted onto a police vehicle, designed to scan and read plates in order to cross reference them with a provincial database.
If any irregularities are found, the patrol officer will be notified in order for them to investigate. The system can identify numerous infractions and violations including stolen, misused or expired license plates, an outstanding warrant, or if the vehicle is associated to someone involved in serious crimes.
The ALPR system has been installed on a marked Smiths Falls police cruiser and will be deployed regularly for patrols.
