UPDATE: Improperly discarded cigarette blamed for ByWard Market hotel rooftop patio fire

By CityNews Ottawa

A small fire has temporarily closed a rooftop patio at a downtown Ottawa hotel until further notice.

The Ottawa Fire Service responded to The Andaz on Dalhousie Street shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4 to put out the blaze.

The patio named 'Copper Spirits and Sights' was already temporarily closed to the public due to the current province-wide stay-at home order, and the hotel said on its Instagram page that there were no injuries in the fire.

Ottawa Fire Service Public Information Officer Carson Tharris told CityNews Wednesday morning that the blaze was the result of a cigarette butt discarded improperly.

According to The Andaz's Instagram, the hotel will be continuing its operations.

The estimated amount of damage to the patio is $30,000.
