More than 100 jobs on the move with closure of Smiths Falls OPP communications centre

By CityNews Ottawa

More than 100 members of the Ontario Provincial Police are set to lose their jobs in Smiths Falls when the town's OPP communications centre closes.

The employees at the centre are mostly civilian. An OPP spokesperson says there are variety of options for the employees, including potential transfers to other OPP locations.

Call-taking and dispatch duties will be moved to Orillia.

The target for closure of the Smiths Falls centre is early in 2022, with a phased decommissioning to be completed by June of that year.

The OPP says the closure will have no effect on front-line policing in the area.
