Heatwave to close majority of western Quebec schools, Monday and Tuesday

By CityNews Ottawa

The Western Quebec School Board is closing most of its facilities early next week due to an incoming heatwave.

With Environment Canada predicting highs above 30 Celsius each day from Saturday until next Thursday, the school board has issued a letter to parents saying the majority of its facilities would be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Director Mike Dubeau says the board is taking heat into consideration as well as the special sanitary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most schools have been trying to take classes outside as much as possible.

With the exception of Western Quebec Career Centre, Namur Intermediate School and Wakefield Elementary School, all western Quebec schools will switch to virtual learning as per each school's learning schedule for June 7 and 8. The three schools listed above have sufficient air conditioning available.

And due to a strike by non-teaching professionals during the morning of june 9, students will be continuing virtual learning that day as well, with classes beginning at noon.

Some schools had COVID-19 vaccinations scheduled for early next week, so the school board said more details will be provided regarding rescheduling soon.
