A 54-year-old man is facing charges after an incident of vandalism at a memorial to Indigenous children lost and buried at former residential schools, set up at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill.
The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) tells CityNews that the Parliamentary Protective Service made an arrest and members of the OPS were called to take a suspect into custody.
Procurement Minister Anita Anand shared her dismay on Twitter on Thursday, June 23.
Last night, the Ottawa Police Service arrested an individual who damaged part of the Centennial Flame memorial for the Indigenous children lost & buried at former Residential Schools.
This is unacceptable. I am extremely disappointed & condemn any interference with the memorial. pic.twitter.com/RZZ6UeiJeI

The minister says the Parliamentary Protective Service is “overseeing and protecting the memorial” for people to mourn safely.
People have been gathering to leave flowers, small stuffed animals, and other tokens of grief and sympathy since the news of the discovery of what are beleived to be the remains of 215 children at a former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C., in late May, 2021.
