COVID-19 outbreak cleared at Ottawa daycare, other indicators of community spread remain stable

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) continues to monitor one outbreak of COVID-19 at a local daycare, but says it's also cleared one.

An outbreak at Grandir Ensemble Garderie La Maisonee daycare has been cleared as of Thursday, August 19, but one remains at St. Anthony's Children's Centre, affecting four children and one staff member.

The health unit is confirming 19 new cases of COVID-19 in the city.

OPH says it knows of 128 active cases of the virus in the community, which is the same number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ottawa over the last seven days.

There are still three people in local hospitals with the novel coronavirus, one of whom is in intensive care.

The health unit's Delta variant data is unavailable for Thursday, but on Wednesday it had reported that there have been 111 cases of the variant in Ottawa during the pandemic and 56 in the last 30 days.

Ottawa's weekly COVID-19 incidence rate is up to 12.1 per 100,000 residents.

Residents being tested for novel coronavirus are seeing positive results 1.5 per cent of the time.

According to OPH's vaccination dashboard, more than 77 per cent of residents over the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The health unit says 84 per cent have received at least one shot. The city's goal is to get 90 per cent of all residents over 12 fully vaccinated.

Ottawa's medical officer of health says unvaccinated residents are more than 20 times more likely to become infected with COVID-19 than someone who is fully vaccinated.

Ontario is reporting 531 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. Of those cases, 80.6 per cent are either in unvaccinated or partly vaccinated individuals. Another six per cent of those cases had unknown vaccination status.

There have been 28,049 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa (27,328 resolved) since March of 2020.

There hasn't been a COVID-19-related death in Ottawa since July 8, keeping the city's pandemic toll at 593.
