Pembroke is Canada’s second “sexiest” town in national survey

Pembroke Mayor Mike LeMay is not surprised when he heard his town placed second in a national online survey.
“I am not surprised at all,” LeMay said. “Is there any doubt because, after all, we are The Heart of the Ottawa Valley.”
LeMay was making reference to the city’s longtime slogan that appears on all the major entrance signs into the city of 14,000 residents.
Although he is not quite ready to change the official slogan to that of second sexiest city.
He looks at it in practical terms. He jokingly observed the time and cost involved to have to go and rebrand everything from second sexiest to the sexiest would require changing all the signs over twice in two years as he is confident the city will reach the top of the rankings next year.
When asked if it was the long winter nights that led to the purchase of so many toys, LeMay fell back on the most valuable statement any politician can fall back on. “No comment,” LeMay said with a chuckle.
The annual list is put together by PinkCherry, an online service that tracks consumer purchases and behaviours.
To be eligible, municipalities must have a population of over 300,000 residents and must be listed as towns. Although Pembroke is officially recognized as a city and not a town, it still placed second.
That ranking and placement will no doubt extend the fun rivalry between nearby Town of Petawawa, which also cracked the top 100 by placing a respectable 55th sexiest city. There has been a long-time fun rivalry between the two urban centres surrounded by a large rural population
While Petawawa has a population of just over 17,000, thanks in large part to the presence of Garrison Petawawa and the thousands of soldiers and civilians posted to the base, it still brands itself a town compared to its neighbour the City of Pembroke with just under 14,000.
Other Ottawa Valley municipalities to make the list of “sexiest towns” in Canada include Carleton Place coming in at 91 and Mississippi Mills ranking 145. Ottawa was listed as the third sexiest city in Canada.
