Ottawa Food Bank raising $800,000 to move to larger warehouse in September

The Ottawa Food Bank is looking to raise nearly a million dollars with an upcoming fundraising campaign to help facilitate its move to a larger warehouse later this year.

The food bank is planning to move to a new location in September, not far from its current warehouse on Michael Street. The new warehouse will be 42,000 sq. ft. – double the size of its current one.

The non-profit organization is looking to raise $800,000 to help cover the cost of the move after its current lease expires.

CEO Rachael Wilson says the charity started looking for the new space about three years ago. While the location has now been found, construction is the next big step.

“We have to outfit this big empty box right now,” said Wilson. “It's a giant square with nothing in it, and we need massive amounts of cold storage. So we're going to be building huge fridges and freezers in there. They'll cost about a million dollars. So it's an expensive move, but there's no spaces really that are fit for a food bank.

“We've been saving our money for a couple of years now knowing that this move is coming. So we're on our final stretch.”
