Mayor Jim Watson hosted Princess Margriet of the Netherlands along with her husband, professor Pieter van Vollenhoven, at Ottawa City Hall on May 13.
The day included a private tour of a City of Ottawa Archives exhibit tracking the Dutch Royal Family’s connection with Ottawa and a luncheon with veterans and residents of Dutch heritage.
A plaque was also unveiled for the renaming of Fairmont Park, near the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, which will now be known as Princess Margriet Park.
Mayor Watson and Princess Margriet of the Netherlands also marked the opening of the Canadian Tulip Festival, which is celebrating its 70th year.
Happy to open the 70th edition of the @CdnTulipfest along with Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet. The Festival is one of the largest events of its kind in the world, and it’s where we celebrate Ottawa’s official flower as a symbol of international friendship and peace.
