About 90 per cent of Hydro Ottawa customers affected by storm back on power grid

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Ottawa Hydro is still chipping away at getting power back to its customers.

As of Sunday, May 29, there are still 11,000 customers without power in pockets throughout the city.

That means Hydro Ottawa was able to get 8,000 customers back on the power grid in the last 24 hours.

In an announcement issued by Hydro Ottawa at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, power has been restored to 90 per cent of impacted customers.

“Hydro Ottawa understands how challenging the past week has been. The level of destruction has been like nothing we have seen before,” the company said in a statement.

“This next part of the restoration is complex as a result of remaining debris, fallen trees and branches and/or damage to customer-owned equipment. If customers notice their electrical equipment (such as service masts, meterbase, or wires running from the meterbase into the electrical panel within the house) has been damaged, they may need to make repairs to their owned equipment before Hydro Ottawa is able to reconnect power. In some cases, temporary repairs may be allowed to enable immediate power. “

Crews will continue restoration efforts and work in the following areas on Sunday:

  • Lincoln Heights/Britannia Heights
  • Fisher Glen, Cityview Skyline and Fisher Heights
  • Parkway Park and Kenson Park
  • South Keys
  • Riverside Park
  • Manotick and Long Island area
  • Carlingwood and Mckellar Heights
  • Tanglewood
  • Pineglen Annex

Hydro Ottawa still has 100 outages to restore as of Sunday.

In total, more than 300 poles needed to be replaced.

In comparison, during the ice storm, 50 poles need replacing while 80 poles needed to be replaced following the tornadoes.
