SIU clears Vancouver police officers who discharged non-lethal weapons during trucker convoy demonstrations

By Alex Black

The province's police watchdog has cleared two members of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) who used their less-lethal firearms during the 'Freedom Convoy' protests in downtown Ottawa.

According to the Special Investigation's Unit (SIU), the two officers were assisting with crowd control on Bank Street on February 19, 2022, when shots were fired at two men, aged 36 and 41.

The investigation shows one officer fired two anti-riot weapon enfield (ARWEN) rounds, while the second officer had fired four baton rounds and one oleoresin capsicum (OC) round from a 40-millimetre penn arms launcher (L140-4).

The SIU said there were no serious injuries involved in the incident.

Following an investigation, the SIU has concluded there are no reasonable grounds to believe the two officers committed a criminal offence in connection with shooting. The SIU will not be proceeding with any criminal charged in connection with the case and the file has been closed.
