Construction begins on the Corkery Community Centre expansion

The expansion and renovation of the Corkery Community Centre began with a groundbreaking celebration hosted by both Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry on June 27.

The centre, located at 3447 Old Almonte Road in Carp, will be receiving a number of different upgrades and renovations to the existing structure. Along with renovations, a 4,176-square-foot addition will be built on the northeast side of the centre overlooking the children's playground and sports fields at Carroll Homestead Park.

“Today's groundbreaking ceremony signals an important and tangible milestone for the City of Ottawa and the Corkery community,” said Watson. “This much-loved and well-used community hub is going to grow, allowing it to better serve one of the fastest growing communities in Ottawa.”

Some of the centre's new features will include:

• A large multi-purpose room
• Office and meeting space 
• A renovated skate-change room 
• A new expanded lobby 
• Updated accessible washrooms 
• A new entrance vestibule
• A new kitchenette
• An additional covered porch
• Additional storage

The project is being funded by the City of Ottawa using development charges and tax-supported funds as well as a partnership contribution by the Corkery Community Association.

“There are so many people who have put countless hours of hard work into the design of this expansion project, and they are to be applauded for their tireless dedication to ensure this dream expansion will soon become a reality,” said Coun. El-Chantiry. 

The City of Ottawa and the Corkery Community Association envision using the highly-anticipated expanded space for a wide range of programs, such as kinder-gym activities, fitness programs such as yoga, a book club and maker space. It's expected that there will be enough room to host multiple activities and programs at a time, as well as larger special events year-round.

“It is already a very popular destination year-round, and this will only enhance community enjoyment,” added Watson.
