Shooting in Ottawa’s south end leaves two men dead, six other people injured

By CityNews Ottawa staff

Two men have been killed while six others suffered injuries after a shooting in Ottawa’s south end.

According to the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) the incident took place while the victims were at a wedding reception at the Infinity Convention Centre in the 2900 block of Gibford Drive, near Uplands Drive and Hunt Club Road.

The OPS said officers and first responders were on the scene after reports of shots fired at about 10:21 p.m.

The two men killed have been identified as Said Mohamed Ali, 26-years-old and Abdishakur Abdi-Dahir, 29-years-old. Both men are from Toronto.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” said an OPS release. “All investigative angles are being explored.”

These are Ottawa’s 11th and 12th homicides of 2023.

The OPS said there is no reason to believe this was a hate-motivated shooting.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking for any witnesses to come forward. No arrests have been made at this time.

Anyone with cell phone, dash cam, security video or any other recording of the area between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. are asked to contact OPS.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPS Homicide Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 5493.

Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 or crimestoppers.ca.

Eric Stubbs, chief of the OPS, told The Sam Laprade Show on Sept. 5 that the shooting is “tragic and very concerning.”

He said the suspects had left the scene by the time police showed up.

Stubbs stated there is no evidence linking the shootings as hate motivated, but “guns and gangs is a path of investigation,” he added.

“We are looking at the background and interactions of people involved to see any linkages there,” he said.

Stubbs said the OPS is working with other policing agencies in Toronto for its investigation.
