The Ottawa Senators have signed defenceman Jake Sanderson to an eight-year contract extension worth $64.4 million.

The contract carries an average annual value of $8.05 million and will go into effect in the 2024-25 season.

Sanderson, 21, made his Senators debut in October 2022 and finished the season with four goals and 32 points, averaging 21:55 TOI per game.

“Jake’s transition to the pro game has been flawless,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said. “An effortless skater who holds himself to a high standard, he has the talent to be one of the best all-around defencemen in the NHL for years to come.”

The Whitefish, Montana native finished sixth in Calder voting and was named to the 2022 NHL All-Rookie Team.

Sanderson was selected fifth-overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, but spent two years at the University of North Dakota before signing his entry-level contract in March of 2022. Internationally, he represented the United States at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championships and the Beijing Winter Olympics.
