Lanark OPP implement CAMSafe security footage database

By CityNews Ottawa staff

In an effort to the time police officers spend searching for footage, a new program has been implemented in Lanark County.

CAMSafe is a program aimed at creating a database of residential and commercial security cameras that may act as a resource for police when investigating offences and crimes within the community.

Officers with the Lanark County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be able to see a map of the local area and click on registered addresses to view further details, including property owner contact information.

However, residents are assured that officers cannot access your security cameras or cloud-based accounts, but rather have to make a request to the property owner to get access to footage.

The OPP says those interested in registering a camera are only required to provide basic contact information and camera location but can include more details if desired. That includes which direction the camera faces, footage retention details or screenshots of the camera view.
