Police nab driver with no insurance, suspended licence

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) took a driver without a valid licence, or any insurance, off the road on Friday, Nov. 3.

The OPS said the driver was stopped using automated licence plate reader (ALPR) technology in the area of Baseline Road and Woodroffe Avenue.

The driver’s vehicle has been seized, and is receiving a court date.

An ALPR is able to scan 5,000 plates an hour and later compared on a provincial data base which reads suspended, prohibited and drivers without licences.

As of March of 2022, the provincial government scrapped renewal fees and licence plate stickers. However, a licence plate renewal is mandatory.

A renewal can be done through Service Ontario and is free.
