Fire crews rescue man from Rideau Canal

Ottawa firefighters helped a man from the Rideau Canal early Saturday morning.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 9-1-1 call just before 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2 that a man was seen in the water along the Queen Elizabeth Driveway and the Laurier Avenue Bridge.

OFS said crews arrived within two minutes and set up a ladder to reach the man. They confirmed that the man was suffering from hypothermia and unable to use his arms or legs.

Firefighters were able to remove the man from the water at 6:38 a.m., but was going in and out of consciousness.

Firefighters and OFS water technicians treated the man until paramedics arrived at the scene. The man was taken to hospital in critical condition.
