A Canadian radio icon has passed away.
Ken ‘The General’ Grant has died at the age of 88.
Grant was the voice of the morning on CFRA, later 1310, during the 60s, 70s and 80s.
For almost 35 years, listeners in Ottawa, the Valley and Gatineau woke up with ‘The General’, who was best known for ‘Forward Ho’ sign off.
Grant was also well known for his off-air work in the community. He was the first in North America to promote the Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Largely due to his leadership, Ottawa was the first Canadian city to raise $1 million on the annual Labour Day telethon.
A well-known foodie, Grant produced a cookbook in 1986, raising $50,000 for the Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre.
Over his career, he made thousands of personal appearances to support community groups, charities, and individuals.
His family plans to hold a celebration of life in the spring. Please register to receive details from Hulse, Playfair & McGarry Funeral Services at www.HPMcGarry.ca
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ken’s name would be appreciated to The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County at www.dementiahelp.ca.
