Ottawa firefighters rescue hypothermic deer from Rideau River near Kars

By Alex Black

It’s a happy ending for a deer that nearly drowned in the Rideau River near Kars.

Around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2, a concerned citizen reported a deer drowning in the water in the 5000 block of Lorne Ridge Road.

When Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) arrived on scene the deer had made its way onto an ice shelf but could not stand due to hypothermia.

Firefighters were able to get the deer to shore safety within about 20 minutes and the deer was wrapped in a blanket.

Also, an off-duty member of the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) allowed firefighters to put the deer in their work shed to provide more heat.

The deer eventually regained use of its legs and was released back into the forest.
