Parents, young people and concerned citizens are set to rally in support of transgender youth in Ottawa.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will be in Ottawa on Monday, Feb. 5 to speak at a networking event at the Sir John A. MacDonald building, and the rally will be held outside at the same time.
In a release, organizers say Premier Smith’s policies will force transgender students back into the closet, ban access to lifesaving healthcare and deny a whole generation of students access to evidence-based sexual health education.
“Premier Smith is infringing on the rights and freedoms of transgender young people and their families” said Fae Johnstone, Executive Director of Queer Momentum. “Though packaged in pretty words and empty reassurances, Premier Smith is championing draconian anti-LGBTQ policies that will hurt vulnerable children.”
“As a parent, I want all kids to be happy and healthy. Premier Smith is risking children’s health by blocking access to health care that some families need and already have a hard time getting” said Kathryn Trevenan, parent of a gender diverse young person in Ottawa. “As the national outcry has revealed, Canadians and Albertans won’t stand for Premier Smith bullying vulnerable kids and their families for her own benefit.”
Those who wish to attend are asked to arrive at 144 wellington Street at 4:45 p.m.
You’re encouraged to wear a mask, come with friends and family and listen to marshals who will be dressed in yellow.
