OFS rescues dog that fell into freezing Rideau River

Firefighters rescued a dog from the Rideau River just before noon on Wednesday.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) say at around 11:45 a.m. they were called to the area of Crichton and St. Patrick Street about a dog that fell through the ice on the Rideau River.

Firefighters say the dog was 20 feet from shore clinging to an ice shelf and was half submerged in the freezing water.

OFS ice rescue technicians ventured out onto the frozen river and brought her ashore.

Firefighters say she is doing well.

“The owner did the right thing by not trying to rescue the dog themselves and calling 9-1-1,” the OFS wrote on X. “Our response times are fast and our Ice Rescue Technicians are highly trained and have the right equipment to make the rescue.”
