Teen suspect in fatal stabbing of high school student charged with murder

The Ottawa Police Services (OPS) Homicide Unit has charged Ibrahim Ocal, 18, following the stabbing death of a 15-year-old, Ellis Smith, in the 100 block of Constellation Drive on May 2.

Ocal was originally charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon by the Criminal Investigations Section, the press release by OPS reads.

Ocal is now charged with first-degree murder after Smith, succumbed to his injuries on May 4.

According to a GoFundMe campaign started to support Smith’s family, the student from Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School underwent emergency heart surgery.

“After two agonizing days in the ICU, and despite all the incredible care he received, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” the campaign message reads. “On Saturday, May 4th, a beautiful sunny day, he died peacefully surrounded by his parents, Shane and Karen, sister Fay, and immediate and extended family.”

Donations will help cover the family’s counselling, funeral costs and other expenses, it reads.

Ocal is scheduled to appear in court on May 8.

Shortly after noon on May 2, a student, Smith, was rushed to hospital after paramedics treated him for stab wounds. A “significant” police presence was in the area while the investigation continued.

At the time the school was put in a Shelter in Place safety mode, which means access to the school was restricted, OCDSB said.

On May 3, Ottawa Police Services (OPS) said they charged an 18-year-old male in relation to the incident. OCDSB said the 18-year-old is not a student at the school.
