Young driver caught going 73 km/h over limit near Moodie Drive

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Ottawa detachment clocked a “young driver” going well above the speed limit on Tuesday evening.

According to officers, the driver was going 173 km/h on Highway 417. Police set up a traffic stop near Moodie Drive, an area they patrol frequently.

The driver now faces a 30-day driving suspension, a 14-day vehicle impound, a minimum $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a driving suspension for a year upon conviction.

This comes a few days after a 19-year-old driver had his dad’s car impounded from stunt driving. The incident happened Aug. 29 in the late afternoon, when an officer clocked a vehicle going 137 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Limebank Road.

Stunt driving continues to be an issue for police in the nation’s capital. Officials noted in June that the number of stunt driving charges is set to be surpassed from the year prior.

Police are surprised to note the number of young people being charged with stunt driving.

“It’s also surprising given the penalties for stunt racing,” Michael Fathi, Media Relations Officer with OPP previously said. “You’re fined, you’re paying a reinstatement fee from the Ministry of Ontario to get your license back, you’re paying tow costs and impound fees, and your insurance is going to skyrocket.”
