Power being restored across Ottawa after brief, but intense, storm

High winds and quick torrential rain battered the nation’s capital on Wednesday night causing a smattering of power outages in the city.
According to the Hydro Ottawa outage map, the hardest hit area is in City View, Carlingwood and Carleton Square neighbourhoods, where more than 7,000 customers are without power on Thursday morning.
“Crews have been working through the night to conduct damage assessments and restore power across the city,” Hydro Ottawa said on its website. “While steady progress has been made, there are still some damaged areas with heavy vegetation and limited access.”
There are reports of trees and hydro wires down from the 107 km/h northwest winds that blew through the city. Environment Canada notes that about 22 millimetres of rain fell throughout the storm at the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier airport.
Portions of the city also saw hail and lots of lightning.
“It is important to remember that Estimated Times of Restoration (ETRs) are estimates that may change as crews gain access to sites to complete their damage assessments,” Hydro Ottawa notes.
This is the second intense storm that capital has seen this summer, along with several tornado warnings. On Canada Day, the city was doused in more than 100 mm of rain that flooded thousands of basements and forced weeks of cleanup.
Many are still being impacted by the effects of the strong systems that continue to hit the city with seemingly little warning.
