Man caught watching pornographic film while driving on Hwy. 417

Provincial police stopped a man who was driving with his phone resting just behind the wheel of his vehicle.

According to police, it happened Dec. 2 just after 4:30 p.m. near March Road. The 38-year-old was seen by an officer watching a pornographic film while driving.

“With the days getting shorter, it’s obviously easier to spot cell phone usage, even when officers are operating a fully marked cruiser,” Constable Michael Fathi told CityNews.

Police fined the man $615 and three demerit points. He did not have any prior convictions for cell phone use.

“Driving requires your full attention. Leave the phone alone, wait until you get home,” officials said.

Fathi said that cell phone usage while driving has never decreased, according to provincial police data.

“People just try to hide it more,” he said. “They keep the phones on their laps instead of higher up. Obviously, that makes it even more dangerous because drivers are looking down instead of at the road.”
