Driver facing $10K in fines, more charges after speeding 134 km/h over limit

Ottawa police added thousands of dollars in fines and more charges to an incident that happened in late September during a speed enforcement blitz.

On Sept. 19, officers were in Orleans issuing charges to drivers exceeding speed limits.

Police say a notable incident from that blitz came shortly after midnight on Sept. 20 when they clocked a BMW travelling at 234 km/h on Highway 174 near Blair Road, breaking the speed limit by 134 km/h.

An Ottawa police K9 unit attempted to stop the driver downtown but they took off. Following an investigation, a 27-year-old man from Ottawa was arrested on Oct. 1.

He was charged with:

• Dangerous operation of a motor Vehicle (Criminal Code)
• Flight from police (Criminal Code)
• Stunt drive – excessive speed (Highway Traffic Act)

Police were able to use police dash-cam video, surveillance footage from a business and witness statements for the case.

Over two months later, officials laid additional careless driving and fail to stop for police charges on top of $10,000 in fines. The driver pled guilty.

• Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed – $6,000 fine
• Careless Driving – $2,000 fine
• Fail to Stop for Police – $2,000 fine

The driver’s licence is suspended for two years.

“Ottawa Police, along with our national capital policing partners, the OPP and RCMP, will continue to target and investigate these irresponsible and dangerous drivers who use our roads in a dangerous manner, ultimately putting innocent lives in danger,” Cst. Phil Kane of the Ottawa Police Traffic Escort & Enforcement Unit, said in a press release.
