Ottawa Fire Services responded to two blazes in the city overnight.
Late Saturday around 10:48 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services Communication Division received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke and flames engulfing a two-storey building. Firefighters responded to the 1900 block of St. Laurent Blvd. and confirmed the living room on the first floor was consumed in smoke and flames.
Firefighters initiated a fast attack, advancing a hose line inside, and confirmed the fire had started in the basement. A crew advanced a second hose line down to the basement and used chainsaws to open up the first floor to extinguish the flames between the basement ceiling and main floor.
A secondary crew completed two full searches of the home but no occupants were found inside.
The fire was declared under control at 11:37 and firefighters contained the fire before it spread to the attached townhomes on both sides. High pressurized fans were used to ventilate smoke out of the structure.
The second fire was reported Sunday just after 1:00 a.m. when Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from inside the Montanas restaurant in the 1700 block of Ogilvie Rd. The caller reported that the commercial kitchen was full of grey smoke.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the two-storey restaurant was engulfed in smoke and flames, visibly coming from the roof.
All occupants were evacuated safely.
Firefighters initiated a fast attack and advanced a hose line inside and towards the kitchen. Responders confirmed that flames had travelled through a ventilation system duct work and up into the roof.
An aerial ladder was set up to attack the fire from above and crews inside pulled down the ceiling in the kitchen to extinguish the flames between the ceiling and the roof.
The fire was declared under control at 1:33 a.m. High pressurized fans were used to ventilate the smoke out of the structure.
No injuries were reported in either fire. A Ottawa Fire Investigator was dispatched to each scene.
