Here are the top baby names of 2023 in Ottawa

The top name in Ottawa reigns supreme as the province unveils the most popular baby names of 2023.

Olivia and Adam were ranked as the year’s top girl and boy names in the nation’s capital. More impressively, Olivia has held the top spot for girls for over a decade across the province, now 15 years and counting.

Noah is in the top spot for the fifth year in a row in Ontario, with Liam following closely behind as the second-most popular name. 


Top 10 girl names in Ottawa

  1. Olivia
  2. Charlotte
  3. Emma
  4. Amelia
  5. Sofia
  6. Mia
  7. Sophia / Maya / Isla
  8. Chloe
  9. Abigail / Mila
  10. Luna

While Sophia was featured in last year’s top 10, the distinctive Sofia is now considered one of the province’s most popular girl names. Both appear in Ottawa’s top 10 list. Mila is a newcomer, while Chloe fell out of the top 10 for Ontario, but it remains a favourite in Ottawa.


Top 10 boy names in Ottawa

  7. Jacob
  8. Benjamin / Ali / Jack
  9. James / Leo
  10. Nathan

The top five is almost identical to last year’s list of top boy names. The only difference is that Lucas moved up from seventh to sixth. Henry joins the list, replacing Ethan, who appeared in the top 10 of 2022.

“Welcoming a new baby and choosing a name is one of life’s most meaningful milestones, and our government is dedicated to helping new parents focus on these special moments rather than paperwork,” said Todd McCarthy, Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement.

The United States Social Security Administration also released its top baby names of 2023, and Olivia landed number one on their rendition. For boys, Liam took the top spot in the U.S., with the names Elijah and James cracking their top 10.
