Driver facing charges for driving uninsured along Hwy 417 with G1

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Ottawa Detachment has laid charges after a driver was stopped along Hwy 417 on Dec. 25.

The driver was pulled over after an Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera notified an officer that the license plate had been taken out of service, wrote OPP in an X post.

Following further investigation, OPP discovered the vehicle was uninsured and the driver held a G1 license.

According to the OPP, the driver was charged with the following:

  • Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
  • Using a license plate not authorized for the vehicle
  • G1 driver operating on a prohibited highway
  • G1 driver operating while unaccompanied by qualified driver
  • G1 driver carrying a passenger in the front seat

The minimum fine for operating a vehicle without insurance is $5,000.

As temperatures drop and precipitation becomes more unpredictable, traffic cops are out in full force to enforce the rules of the road.

The OPP Highway Safety Division is also reminding drivers to slow down and move over for emergency first responders on highways.

OPP urge drivers to pack emergency and first aid kits, warm clothing, blankets, water and perishable food, especially for those taking road trips over the holidays.

Booster cables, sand or cat litter, a small shovel, extra windshield washer fluid and an external battery are also recommended, wrote OPP in a post on X.
