Driver clocked going 64 km/h over speed limit; another faces $5K fine

Police stopped a driver on Highway 417 on New Year’s Eve after clocking the vehicle travelling well above the speed limit.

An officer from the Ottawa detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) caught the driver going 164 km/h and ended up charging the person with stunt driving. This means they received a 30-day driving suspension, a 14-day vehicle impound and upon conviction could face a $2,000 fine, six demerit points and a one-year driving prohibition.

On the same night, police also charged four drivers without insurance. One of the vehicles stopped was caught after the officer received a Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera notification that the plate permit was expired. After investigating, the officer confirmed the vehicle was not insured.

The penalty for driving without insurance is $5,000.

The ALPR system is able to scan 5,000 plates an hour compared to a provincial database, which reads suspended, prohibited and drivers without licences.
