Crews tackle high-heat kitchen fire in Greenboro area

Firefighters were out battling flames in one of the city’s south communities, as the snow fell across the nation’s capital last night.

Crews were called at 8:33 p.m. on Thursday night to the 0-100 block of Silverlace Private in Greenboro just off Lorry Greenberg Drive. There, officials saw smoke and flames coming from an end-unit townhome and three people safely outside. Firefighters grabbed a hose and began their climb to the kitchen, having to spray water on the ceiling as they moved due to the level of heat.

Once at the door, crews had to turn back because the flames had already spread to the cabinets above the stove, fuelling the blaze and creating even hotter conditions. Backing out of the home and down the stairs another crew continued to tackle the fire from the outside.

Eventually, officials were able to make their way back into the residence and the blaze was under control by 9:25 p.m.

Fans were needed to ventilate the area and two searches were done. The damage has displaced two adults and a child and victim assistance was called to the scene.

A fire investigator is trying to determine what started the blaze.
