Exposure of blood infections possible from 2 beauty salons in Ottawa

There is a potential for blood-borne infections for people who went to either Gorgeous Brows and Lashes locations in the nation’s capital, the Ottawa Public Health (OPH) Unit said.

According to a press release, the health agency is warning there is a risk for people who went to get a manual facial with the use of a comedone extractor with lancet, a tool used to remove blackheads and treat clogged pores. The locations impacted include the storefront at 3900 Innes Rd. or 2210 Bank St.

People who could be impacted received the treatment before Dec. 6.

“During routine inspections, OPH Public Health Inspectors identified an infection prevention and control (IPAC) lapse at both of these locations,” the press release reads.

A lapse happens when, for example, cleaning or sterilization practices are not followed properly, putting clients and employees at risk of infection.

The alert does not apply to people who had other services done at these locations like threading, tinting, lash extension or henna tattoos, which don’t use the comedone extractor.

The cleaning practices have been corrected since the inspection, the health agency says, meaning there is no ongoing risk to the public. The business and owner have cooperated throughout the health agency’s investigation.

“Improper sterilization practices can lead to bacterial skin infections, and, in rare circumstances, may spread blood-borne infections such as hepatitis Bhepatitis C, and, to an even lesser extent, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV),” the press release notes.

Next steps for those impacted:

  • OPH says people should speak to a health care provider as a precaution if they believe they are impacted
  • Those unsure should still contact a health care provider to understand their risk
  • Testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV is free for Ontario residents with a health card
