Flames ‘shooting out’ from 10th floor high-rise near Bayshore Mall

Crews tackled a blaze in the Bayshore community on Wednesday evening.

In a video posted on social media, flames could be seen coming from an apartment in the building at around 6:41 p.m. Firefighters said they got multiple 911 calls for smoke and a fire coming from the 10th floor.

They arrived in four minutes and saw flames “shooting out” of a balcony door. Trying to make their way inside, crews were met with heavy black smoke throughout the hallway.

Finally, at the unit they brought a hose inside, while another team searched the hallways and unit for people.

An OC Transpo bus was brought to the scene to shelter people who had evacuated.

With quick action from crews, the fire was contained to the apartment before it could spread and was under control by 7:01 p.m.

Extensive ventilation was needed to get rid of the smoke in the building before people could return.
