Rideau Canal Skateway set to reopen

Winter isn’t over just yet, at least not according to the National Capital Commission which is set to reopen the Rideau Canal Skateway Sunday morning.

Beginning at 8 a.m., visitors will be able to resume walking and skating on an approximately 4.5 km stretch between Rideau Street and Bank Street.

“The public’s cooperation in preserving the ice surface, combined with cold overnight temperatures over the past week allowed our teams to extend the Skateway season,” a release from the NCC states. “The ice has been swept, flooded and smoothed to welcome the public back again.”

Skating operations were paused as of Feb. 24 when temperatures peaking above zero led to soft surfaces.

As of Sunday morning, rental services, change rooms, and food and beverage concessions will continue to be available during their regular opening hours.

Since the skateway’s opening on Jan. 11, it has registered nearly 1.1 million visits.
