The Liberal Party of Canada confirmed, in a post on X, that Prime Minister Mark Carney will run in the Ottawa riding of Nepean in the next federal election.
This will be the first time for Carney to run in a federal election as he has never held elected office. He became prime minister after winning the Liberal leadership in early March.
The riding has been held since 2015 by Chandra Arya, who was disqualified from the Liberal leadership and then recently told he would not be allowed to run as MP again.
National campaign director Andrew Bevan informed Arya in a letter on March 20, just days before an expected election call.
Arya had already been nominated, but the letter says new information obtained by the party’s “green light committee” led the campaign co-chair to recommend that his “status as a candidate” be revoked.
Bevan does not include any details about the new information.
Carney is expected to trigger a federal election on Sunday.
