One person dead following Friday morning fire in Pembroke, Ont.

One person has died in a local hospital after being pulled from a structure fire in the Ottawa Valley Friday morning.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Friday, OPP and Pembroke Fire Department (PFD) were called to the 300 block of Mary St. with reports of black smoke coming from a building.

PFD says it originally responded with one truck and the duty crew. Upon arrival, all resources were dispatched to the scene. A total of 27 firefighters and four vehicles responded to the incident.

Despite a fast attack, PFD says significant smoke and fire damage was sustained throughout the building.

Upper Ottawa Valley OPP say one person was pulled from the structure and taken to a local hospital where they later succumbed to their injuries. OPP say the cause of death cannot yet be confirmed, but investigators do not believe there is an imminent threat to public safety. The identity of the deceased person has not been confirmed.

“The PFD extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victim in today’s fire,” Fire Services wrote on X. “Thanks to the OPP, Renfrew County Paramedics, Ottawa River Power Corporation and the Red Cross for their support. Thank you to the Pembroke firefighters who worked tirelessly.”

An investigation is still underway and anyone with information is asked to contact UOV OPP or submit a tip to Crime Stoppers.
