Garbage fire in stairwell of downtown apartment building

A 911 caller reported to the fire department that smoke and flames were coming from the basement of an apartment building in downtown Ottawa.

Crews arrived quickly to a multi-unit low-rise building in the 200 block of O’Connor Street. A working fire was declared as teams entered the building.

Inside a basement stairwell they found “rubbish on fire.”

It was contained to the area of origin after firefighters doused it with water. The fire was out within 10 minutes of officials arriving.

Teams used fans to ventilate residual smoke out of the building.
