Jewellery, wallets, phones among objects targeted by distraction thieves; OPS

The Ottawa Police Service is cautioning residents against the threat of distraction theft as incidents pop up across the city.

Police say suspects often approach individuals who are alone in public spaces like parking lots. They may begin conversations under false pretenses such as asking for directions or offering a gift.

“In many cases, they attempt to place a piece of jewellery, such as a necklace, around the person’s neck while distracting them,” OPS say in a press release. “Victims typically realize only afterward that a valuable item has been stolen.”

Charm and deception are the tactics police say suspects use to get close to their targets and often take things like visible jewellery or personal belongings like phones, wallets or purses.

OPS is offering four tips to protect yourself against theft including:

  • avoiding the display of expensive or sentimental jewellery;
  • staying alert to one’s surroundings;
  • not allowing strangers to invade personal space or touch you; and
  • if approached by a stranger, walk away and seek help.

Police say if a stranger tries to place an object on you, it is a red flag.

Police say if you believe you’ve been a victim or witness to a distraction theft, do not attempt to follow the suspect. Instead call 9-1-1 and provide a description of the suspect and any vehicle involved.
