SIU probing police chase on Highway 7 after 57-year-old is killed

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a fatal accident west of the nation’s capital happened Sunday evening.

The situation started just before 8:30 p.m. when officers from the Ontario Provincial Police responded to reports of a vehicle being driven “erratically.” According to officials, the scene was unfolding on Highway 7 as the vehicle was travelling westbound.

An officer in the area near Madoc, Ont., was heading east when they saw the suspect vehicle travelling “at a high rate of speed.”

The officer proceeded to follow the vehicle. A short time after, in the area of Highway 7 and St. Lawrence Street West, they came across a crash between the vehicle and a motorcycle.

The 57-year-old driver of the bike was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old man in the car was not injured.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invokes its mandate in incidents where a person is seriously injured or killed following or during a police interaction.
